Plein Air Season is Underway

Sachuest Point is a special place to paint- a National Wildlife Refuge that has grasslands and overlooks both Sachuest Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Trails and beaches, so many places to paint! Here’s my pick.

It was so windy I didn’t even set up my tripod, but braced my paintbox between some rocks and tried to capture the essence of the scene. 8x10 oil on a linen panel. It felt great to be painting outside! When it’s framed-heading to Spring Bull Gallery in Newport, RI.

Seal Cove

Seal Cove, Oregon- what a magical place. We are traveling in our motorhome and the campground is right across from the Pacific Ocean. Cross the 101-look carefully!- then a set of steps to the beach. At the first landing is a bench where I set up to paint the magnificent rocky shoreline. The painting is 8x16 and already has been SOLD!

People walking on the beach asked for a photo of the painting- of course I said yes, but then asked them to take one of me. The artist in her happy place!

Thank you Camellia Art!

So happy to hear that my South Carolina Gallery Camellia Art on Hilton Head Island has found a home for this Big -40x60!- Beauty. Titled Sand Patterns, it reflects my love of shape and color found along the coastline. Intrigued by patterns that form with the shifting tides, this restful yet dynamic painting invites the viewer to contemplate the wonders of nature… and be filled….as I was…with gratitude.

No Expectations

Moonlight was painted without any reference, on a night I had watched the moon come up from my deck. Frustrated with some physical issues that have prevented me from painting plein air this summer, I just went into the studio without any plan.

Why not just push paint around? No expectations, no agenda.

Not how I usually work at all, but it worked without my having to try too hard.

Magic. Do you believe in magic? Let go and see what happens.

Let’s Meet at the Beach

Two chairs and an umbrella- all set up for a great day at the beach. I got in the ocean yesterday and even though it was only 55, it felt so invigorating. This painting will remind you of the long days of summer. Take time to do the things you enjoy- time is moving fast!

16x20 painted in oil on a deep gallery wrapped canvas.

Driftwood Beach II

Driftwood Beach is such a surreal place, so unlike the beaches full of play and umbrellas. Here you must walk carefully, as roots and branches are underfoot. The strange shape of the fallen trees take on human form when you look at them a certain way. A little 6x6 oil on a cradled panel now available in my Daily Paintworks gallery. Just click on the link!

Driftwood Beach I

This small painting of a section of Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, GA is a study of blues and tans. As calming as this color palette is, there is something surreal, and otherworldly about this whole place. Due to 200 years of erosion the soil became unable to support the trees, which then fell and decayed over time. Sun-bleached and preserved to walk among, photograph, paint, or just enjoy the uniqueness of this place.

Winter Sky

The clouds were swirling as the sun tried so hard to break through. The beach on Hilton Head is still cold in January, especially early when we are there to walk Cooper. It never gets old and even though this little painting is only 5x5- it’s full of drama! Available from my DailyPaintworks gallery for $95, which includes free shipping.
