The Pink Shovel and A Complementary Palette

This painting is 12x12 (on canvas) and was painted from direct observation. It’s a few years old but looks fresh to my eyes; the folds of fabric in the long pink sash is a motif I would like to visit again. How would I paint it today? I have a collections of plastic kids beach toys- their bright colors are always fun.

Note the complementary color palette- always smart to set up some parameters  I can learn from when gathering objects for a still life. The foreground shadow color is a mixture of the green of the shovel with the pinks. The folds in the pink sash are a warm deep red with green undertones.

Watching The Tide Come In

My first time to paint outside since we've been back in Rhode Island. We have had a cold and wet spring but I took advantage of a good day to head out with a friend.
This spot is at the end of Ledge Road in Newport, where the parking is sketchy and the ocean is within steps. After my easel took a spill, I regrouped and found my way back into feeling comfortable being outside. Sun, wind, and if you paint plein air, you know that anything can happen. It felt so good to be outside painting again!

Inspired right where I am

Plein air from my deck. Love painting on location but there's something to be said for stay and paint- right where you are! The most inspiring spot can be right in front of you!
