Iris I

Went to the studio early Sunday morning, planning to work on the river walk painting. I quickly got distracted by a bunch of flowers and thought I would do a warm-up painting. Staying with bigger brushes as much as I could, finding the essentials that speak iris to me. Happy with the results.I love how unexpected things occur in the studio, for me who plans so much! Spontaneity spoken here.

Riverwalk-beginning

I'm starting a series of larger format paintings of cafes, restaurants, umbrellas, with and without people present. This palette is not my usual one, so many more earth tones I have to resist brightening things up as I want a more tonal painting.
The early tonalists were interested in mood and atmosphere, but I am looking more for the cohesiveness that this limited palette is bringing to the work. This is the first stage, blocking in the shapes, determining the value structure, and getting the canvas (24x24) covered.

Cafe 1

Back to the image from the coffee shop. Almost finished, wanted to post it to help see what needs to be done. Can already see that the foreground figures hat is too light, needs to be a lower value to bring the viewer more easily into the scene.Comments are most welcome.

untitled and unfinished

Working on a series of coffee shop images, people in a hurry to get their jo and go, others lingering and chatting. I'm interested, as usual, in the space around the people, always inspired by Hopper.Using a palette that includes a warm and cool red, yellow and blue plus white.Wanting to get a bigger surface to work on, a piece of glass. Glad to be in the studio, another bad cold had me down and out, at home holed up with a book.

Winter White

Happy New Year to everyone. Wishes for you to be inspired to create, to learn and grow, to love more deeply as you travel on whatever path you have chosen at the onset of a new decade. May abundance fill your life!
This 18x24 painting was done from yet more lovely flowers Judy has brought into the studio. The view out the window is of the big pond, across the street from 1st Beach in Newport, Rhode Island. I am certainly blessed to live in such an amazing place. Even though the weather has been for far too long in the 20's.It was colder here than it was when I was in Chicago before Christmas, and that's just not right!
