Painted with a group from the Newport Art Museum at a spectacular location - The Blue Garden. This link tells the story of its history, and the ongoing preservation. I walked around quite a bit, enjoying the variety of perennials and annuals, the water features, and the gentle, peaceful ambiance. 

 

 

Best of Mystic

So very excited and honored to have been juried into this upcoming show titled Best of Mystic at the Providence Art Club! August 6-25 with the opening reception on August 12th- from 4 to 6.

My painting is titled Hauled Out and is 24x24. My inspiration is the hard working fleet of fishing boats right here in Newport, RI. This image is from the State Pier, filled with the sight, sounds, and yes the aromas of a working harbor.

 

Quiet Cove

So much fun painting at Brenton Cove this morning in Newport. The first two pics are details, then the final painting. Finished in the studio- tweaking the values- my eyes seemed to have trouble with the brightness of the day. I’ve never worn my glasses, never mind dark glasses to paint- but…..

This one is 12x24 and looks great in this wide frame rimmed with gold. I’m in love with the lobster boat in the foreground, but there’s a cat boat at anchor and some Opti’s racing in the background. 

 

Rough Point

This is the view of the Atlantic Ocean from Rough Point, the summer home of the heiress Doris Duke. The link will take you to Newport Restoration Foundation which has preserved much historical architecture in Newport, RI. It was a pleasure to paint there on a morning when it wasn’t open yet to the public and our group could explore the grounds freely. I chose a corner of the main house ( really more like a mansion ) and one of the many rocky outcroppings. Plein air at its best!

Spouting Rock and how things have changed

Years ago, before the signs and the fences, we would climb up and over these rocks to see the high and wild spume that was present at high tide from a deep crevice in the rock face. It fascinated us all and is a childhood memory for my kids. 

Inaccessible today, I painted from the shore.

Quiet Cove

Monday was a perfect day and I got to Fort Adams early to scout the area and find where I wanted to set up and paint. I was soon joined by others, Monday’s Palette is the Plein Air group I paint with and we’ve got a show coming up in August at Spring Bull Gallery in Newport, RI.

One boat I had wanted to paint had someone on board- soon the flag was up and the anchor hauled out. I was glad I hadn’t started a painting, but that’s certainly happened to me before.

That’s where the camera does come in handy- I’m not a Plein air purist who never goes back into the work later in the studio to make it a better painting.

My eyes were drawn to the deep green of the water and the reflections

A Bare Start

I almost didn't post this because its the very beginning of a painting and EVERYTHING needs to be resolved. On the other hand, it's interesting to see the artists mind at work, how the bones of a painting are conceived.I began this from multiple reference photos that I took during the torrential rains we had earlier this week as I want to show a wide angle view. I have wanted to do a series of Newport intersections for some time now, this one is America's Cup Ave with Mill Street on the right. The park is Queen Anne's Square with Trinity Church at the center of the painting. 24x36

Our Time

An older painting that still resonates with me...mother and daughter at the beach, spending time together. The clock behind them says 9am...perfect day, all day together!

State Pier

The fishing fleet in Newport has long fascinated me, both as subject to paint and an industry to respect and protect. This view is looking back towards Long Wharf.
